Breaking the Cycle

Wellbeing starts at home. We fund holistic programs working with parents and caregivers to build protective bonds and heal intergenerational cycles of trauma.

Featured grantee

Safe & Sound

The Sarlo Family Foundation is a longtime supporter of the Center for Youth Wellness, which merged with Safe & Sound in 2021. Safe & Sound is building on its 50-year legacy of collaborating with Bay Area families to advance healing, equity, and justice as it becomes a leading force in the national movement to transform the child welfare system.

Last year, Safe & Sound authored a groundbreaking issue brief calling for a paradigm shift from mandated reporting to community supporting—prioritizing the protective factors of parental resilience and knowledge, social and emotional competence of children, social connection, and concrete support in times of need to mitigate the effects of child abuse, neglect, and trauma. The organization has taken a prominent role on a taskforce to advance the report’s recommendations statewide.

Locally, Safe & Sound serves thousands of families each year through individualized support, group parenting classes, and a 24-hour crisis talk line. The team also oversees the San Francisco Family Resource Center Alliance, which supports and advocates for the needs of over 40,000 low-income families. Over the last few years, Safe & Sound has received federal funds to help determine best practices in integrating the screening and treatment of adverse childhood experiences in pediatric healthcare across the country.

“The flexible funding we get from the Sarlo Family Foundation is like a golden egg. Sarlo understands how complex our work is and affords us the capacity we need to create a thoughtful, sustainable approach to addressing trauma in the lives of children and families. It allows us to serve in a community-informed, family-centered way rather than being forced to continue a program through a grant cycle when it may not be meeting families’ needs in the moment.”
