Youth Empowerment

We believe youth know best what they need. We fund organizations centering and empowering youth to break down stigma around mental health and wellbeing, connect in community, and turn their ideas into purposeful action.

Across the country, youth are asking: how do we create positive change within an increasingly stressful and uncertain world? By coming together in healing spaces that prioritize the well-being of all, youth are developing the knowledge, networks, and skills they need to challenge the status quo in revolutionary ways.

Launched in 2019, the Youth Power Fund is a network of youth and funders working together to cultivate and sustain a robust youth organizing ecosystem. Fueled by the vision and values of youth themselves, Youth Power Fund invests in youth organizing both as a social change strategy and an opportunity to deepen youth development, leadership, and wellbeing.

The coalition’s participatory grantmaking has provided flexible funding to 29 youth organizing programs across 10 Northern California counties working on a range of issues including climate justice, education, decriminalization, transgender rights, and more. Youth Power Fund also hosts field building convenings and healing retreats for youth organizing groups in the region.

“The Sarlo Family Foundation aligns with our deep investment in youth wellbeing—not self-care, but actually collective care. Together we are committed to creating spaces where young people can connect and heal across identities, across communities. Where they can be with one another in their fullness. Where they can take radical leaps of imagination. There’s no question: youth mental health is the cutting edge of the next decade of youth organizing.”
